How Far Has Will Smith Eating Spaghetti Come?

In 2023, an AI tried to make Will Smith eat spaghetti and produced a nightmare. It became the most famous test in AI video. Watch the same prompt, year by year, turn into something almost real.

Every field gets an unofficial benchmark, the one test everybody runs just to see how far things have come. For AI video, it is a plate of pasta. In March 2023, a Reddit user named chaindrop typed five words into an early text-to-video model called ModelScope: Will Smith eating spaghetti. What came back was ten seconds of glorious chaos, a face that would not sit still, hands that forgot how hands work, and spaghetti that behaved like it had plans of its own.

The clip went everywhere, and it never really left. Each new generation of AI video models gets fed the same prompt, and the results have become the easiest before-and-after in the whole field. No charts, no benchmarks, just pasta. Here is the whole lineage, oldest first, every version watchable right here on YouBoob.

The lineage, year by year

The turning points are easy to spot. The 2023 original is pure fever dream. By late 2024 the face holds together. In May 2025, Google's Veo 3 added sound, and the spaghetti famously crunched. A few months later Veo 3.1 smoothed out the chewing, and by early 2026 critics were saying the test had finally been passed.

Will Smith himself got the last laugh early on: in February 2024 he posted his own parody, cramming real spaghetti into his mouth under the caption “This is getting out of hand!” When the human has to imitate the machine imitating the human, you know a meme has fully arrived.

We keep every version in the collection under The Spaghetti Test, and we will add each new model's attempt as it appears. Same prompt, new year, better pasta.
