The dinosaur who charmed an audience in 1914
Gertie the Dinosaur · Winsor McCay
In 1914 Winsor McCay stood on stage beside a screen and gave orders to a cartoon dinosaur named Gertie. She bowed, danced, sulked and munched on a tree, and audiences fell in love with her. Gertie was one of the first cartoon characters with a real personality. More than a century later, her playfulness still comes through.
